Tummy Tuck Q & A

Should I consider a tummy tuck?

If you’re generally healthy and achieved a normal weight but still have pockets of fat or loose skin that don’t respond to diet and exercise, a tummy tuck can help.

You may be bothered by the skin around your belly that’s lost some of its elasticity. This often happens to women following pregnancy and childbirth.

Good candidates have realistic expectations from the surgery. A tummy tuck isn’t a substitute for weight loss or exercise.

You should quit smoking before undergoing surgery as tobacco use inhibits healing. Women should also be sure they’re done with their families as future pregnancy will alter your results.

What happens during a tummy tuck?

During a tummy tuck at POSH Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, you’re placed under general anesthesia. The procedure takes anywhere from 3–5 hours.

Dr. Gbulie makes two incisions: one from hip bone to hip bone, close to the pubic area, and another around your navel. He separates the skin from the abdominal muscles and then pulls the muscles together.

The area is then stitched to create a firmer abdomen and narrower waist. He brings the flap of skin down to cover your abdominal muscles, removing any excess and repositioning your navel.

What is recovery like following a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck generally requires an overnight hospital stay. You may have a temporary tube inserted at the surgical site to drain excess fluid and reduce swelling.

Your total recovery time takes anywhere from 2-8 weeks. Dr. Gbulie will explain the physical restrictions you’ll need to abide by for about six weeks. He’ll let you know when you can return to your full level of activity.

Are the results of a tummy tuck permanent?

The results of a tummy tuck are lasting, as long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid major weight gain. You will have a scar that spans from hip to hip, but it’s easily concealed with underwear.

If you’re ready to get the flat, toned stomach you desire, call POSH Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery to learn more about a tummy tuck or book online today.
